to MEDITERRANEAN CARDIOVASCULAR COURSE

Focus on Coronary Stents
Marrakesh, Morroco, April 2008

From Imhotep to Hippocrates, Celsus to Galen, the Mediterranean World has been the cradle of Modern Medicine. In the cardiovascular field, Ibn an-Nafis suggested that the right and left ventricles of the heart were separate and described the lesser circulation of blood. Andreas Vesalius corrected Greek medical errors, noted that the heart had four chambers, and that the blood vessels originated in the heart, not the liver. Miguel Serveto described the circulation of blood through the lungs. Amato Lusitano described venous valves in the azygos vein and their function for the first time. Realdo Colombo described the circulation of blood through the lungs in detail. Andrea Cesalpino described the heart’s valve action, and began to use the term circulation. Girolamo Fabrici studied leg veins and noticed that they have valves which allow blood to flow only toward the heart. In Padua, he was the teacher of William Harvey, who later explained that the vein-artery system is a continuous loop and that the heart works like a pump to push blood in a one-way circuit through the body.

We are therefore very pleased to welcome you at the First MEDITERRANEAN CARDIOVASCULAR COURSE. This new event will allow cardiologist from the whole Mediterranean World and beyond to gather and exchange ideas. The first edition will take place in Marrakesh, Morroco, and will focus on CORONARY STENTS. Coronary stent implantation is the most commonly performed major medical intervention and millions of patients have benefited from this major progress in percutaneous coronary intervention. This meeting, tailored for all cardiovascular specialists interested in Interventional Cardiology, will encompass all aspects of coronary stenting : basic knowledge, clinical decision making process, accepted guidelines, complex and challenging cases, will update information about both bare metal stents and drug-eluting stents, especially regarding the issues of stent thrombosis and duration of antiplatelet therapy, and will address all new developments in stent technology. We hope you will be part of this exciting new event.
